Reviewing less-visible copy-trading costs
This post is also available in Persian ←

Copying costs extend beyond subscriptions. Review execution, holding, conversion and fee rules on a common period and basis without deducting included charges twice.
A copying service’s advertised subscription price may represent only part of a follower’s costs. Execution, position holding and currency conversion can also change outcomes. Less-visible does not necessarily mean deliberately concealed. Establish where each item is recorded and what remains unknown.
Separate explicit charges from execution effects
Subscriptions, commissions and performance fees commonly have identifiable entries or terms. Spreads and slippage may be reflected in entry and exit prices rather than separate debits. If net results already use actual fills, deducting the same price effect again can overstate costs. Read each column’s definition.
Turnover matters alongside unit rates
Two providers with identical commission rates can generate different total charges through trade frequency and quantity. Compare a common period, actual follower sizes and instruments. A low rate alone does not establish a better net outcome. This article recommends neither increasing nor decreasing trade frequency.
A hypothetical no-double-counting example
Suppose recorded trading results after actual fills and commissions are 80 units. A separate subscription costs ten, and holding charges excluded from that result are five. With no other items, the outcome after those charges is 65. If holding charges were already inside the 80, subtracting five again would be wrong. This is not a real account return.
Read performance-linked fee rules
Settlement periods, profit bases, prior-loss recovery and provider-switching effects can matter. An advertised rate may precede discounts or apply only under particular conditions. Retain the agreement version valid during the period, and distinguish an estimated charge from a confirmed debit.
A follower-account cost table
- Item name, recipient and contractual basis.
- Amount, currency and posting or settlement time.
- The related period and trading quantity.
- Whether the item is included in the current result or needs separate treatment.
- Discounts, refunds, corrections and unknown items.
Remember conversion and exit costs
Account-currency conversion, permitted transfers and leaving a service may have separate charges. Conversion rates and times are needed for an interpretable monetary total. Do not silently turn a one-off charge into a fixed monthly rate. Any payment or settlement destination must belong to the same user and meet applicable registration or approval rules. Another person’s account is not a substitute.
Do not treat opportunity cost as a confirmed debit
An unfilled order or delay may create a different opportunity, but its value is generally assumption-dependent. Do not present it like a fee actually deducted from the account. Preserve the boundary between posted charges and hypothetical scenarios, and do not selectively omit unfavourable entries.
When reviewing accounts and trading methods, read costs with actual execution and reporting periods. Calculation tools can examine assumptions, not replace statements. This article recommends no subscription or provider and guarantees no net return.
