Weekend price-gap risk in forex
This post is also available in Persian ←

Forex reopening prices can differ from the last tradable quote. Review weekend exposure, stop-order execution limits and the manager’s agreed monitoring and response plan.
When an account’s trading access closes, news does not stop. Economic or political events can occur while the owner lacks ordinary order-execution access. At reopening, the first tradable price may differ from the last quote before the closure. That gap is not equivalent to a continuous move with an exit available at every intermediate price.
A displayed price is not necessarily tradable
Opening hours, closing hours and available quote types depend on the host and instrument. A chart or another source may display a number that is not executable in the account under review. Check official schedules, time zones and seasonal changes. The general forex label does not establish identical hours across all accounts.
A stop level does not guarantee an exit price
If the market moves past a stop level and the first executable price is farther away, an ordinary stop instruction may produce a different outcome from its entered level. Activation and execution depend on the instrument’s rules. Any special guarantee requires its own agreement and conditions; a stop-loss button alone does not create one.
A hypothetical example without position-size advice
Suppose the last valid quote before closure is 1.1000 and the first tradable quote after reopening is 1.0950. For a long position, the adverse move may have passed a stop level between those prices. This example establishes neither the probability of a gap, the account’s monetary loss nor a certain execution price.
Review more than one position
Several trades sharing a currency can react to the same event. Collateral value, other positions and margin rules can also affect the outcome. Different instrument names do not necessarily mean independent risks. Review total account exposure alongside the ability to exit under constrained conditions.
Questions before the weekend
- Is holding through closure part of the stated strategy and manager’s authority?
- How are open exposure and shared currency factors reported?
- When does trading stop and resume, and which order types are restricted?
- Who monitors the account and communicates during an outage?
- Are holding costs and settlement conditions reviewed separately from gap risk?
Agree on the response before an event
Clarify who may change exposure and which actions require the owner’s approval. Record access to information separately from trading access. Closing or retaining positions has no universal answer across strategies, and this article is not a weekend trading instruction. The purpose is to avoid decisions made without adequate information or clear authority.
Reconcile outcomes after reopening
Retain the reference quote, order activation and fill timestamps, executed quantity and the host’s explanation. A difference from another chart does not alone prove an execution error or misconduct. Where evidence is incomplete, limit the conclusion accordingly and ask a specific question.
When assessing managed forex accounts, consider holding-period exposure alongside returns. The platform guides help explain available processes but cannot predict the timing or size of a future gap.
Recognizing weekend risk does not eliminate it. An absence of severe gaps in a short record does not establish account safety or suitability for an individual’s financial needs.
