Smart-contract risk alongside market risk

Smart-contract risk differs from price risk. Review spending permissions, upgrades, oracles and exit routes separately; an audit or open code does not guarantee capital safety.

Losses in a smart-contract activity do not arise only from asset-price movements. Code defects, administrative powers or dependency failures can affect access to assets or their value. Low price volatility does not remove these risks. Automated or decentralised labels should not replace examination.

Where exactly does the asset go?

Holding a token in a wallet, depositing it into a contract and receiving a receipt or replacement token are different states. Map entry, received assets and exit conditions without conducting an actual transaction. Several contracts, bridges or services may be involved; reviewing only the main protocol name is insufficient.

Distinguish spending approval from completed transfer

An approval can allow a contract to use a specified amount even if the full amount does not move immediately. Read permission scope and revocation procedures in reliable documentation. This article requests no wallet connection, transaction signature, recovery phrase or private key.

A hypothetical stable price but unavailable exit

Suppose the asset price has not changed materially but the contract’s withdrawal route is temporarily paused. A quiet price chart does not prove immediate access to funds. Investigate the cause and user rights separately. This example describes no actual protocol and guarantees neither recovery nor a time for reopening.

List material dependencies

  • The principal contracts and versions actually used.
  • Upgrade, pause or parameter-changing authority and who holds it.
  • The price source or oracle and behaviour with invalid data.
  • Bridges, collateral or intermediate assets involved.
  • Exit conditions, charges and liquidity constraints.

Code audits have dates and boundaries

An audit report should identify the reviewed version and scope. Later changes, deployment settings or excluded components may require separate review. No finding in one report does not establish the absence of every vulnerability. Open code provides visibility, not a guarantee that every user can evaluate it.

Account-manager authority also needs boundaries

If a manager uses contract-based tools, define permitted activities and responsibility for examining dependencies. A service without capital custody can still involve trading-permission or contract-interaction risks. Changed methods or newly added protocols must not silently inherit the previous risk description.

Do not reduce the risk report to one percentage

Historical price drawdown cannot summarise every access, code and authority risk. Make missing information and response routes explicit. When reviewing accounts, distinguish market risk from infrastructure risk. Managers can describe scope without secrets in a cooperation inquiry. This framework approves no protocol security, recommends no investment and claims no active product connection to smart contracts.
