Fixed versus performance fees in dedicated management
This post is also available in Persian ←

Fixed and performance fees create different incentives and effects. Review calculation bases, settlement timing, prior losses, early exits and net costs under the actual agreement.
Dedicated-management charges may be a fixed amount, an asset-based percentage, a performance share or a combination. The label alone is insufficient for comparison. Establish the calculation basis, payment timing and treatment of losses or termination.
What exactly is fixed?
A fixed periodic amount differs from a fixed percentage of assets. The percentage may stay constant while the monetary charge changes with capital. Clarify valuation dates, minimum charges and partial-period treatment. Separate management charges from host, execution and transfer costs. An all-inclusive label needs an explicit list of covered items.
Define eligible performance
Realised results versus equity, before-cost versus after-cost figures, and opening values versus prior peaks can produce different charges. Prior-loss recovery and hurdle rates, where included, require precise definitions. The term success fee does not automatically establish these protections.
Two hypothetical simple structures
Suppose a period produces 100 units before management charges, with other costs already included. One structure charges a fixed 20; another charges only 20 percent of that eligible profit. Both are 20 in this example. At a profit of 50, the first costs 20 and the second ten. Treatment of a loss depends on the actual agreement. These are neither recommended rates nor performance forecasts.
Settlement timing can change the comparison
Identical percentages with different crystallisation periods need not produce identical amounts. If a charge becomes final before a later decline, review refund or recovery rules explicitly. A verbal promise to reconsider does not replace valid contractual terms. Ask about effective dates and calculation bases for partial withdrawals and termination too.
A contract comparison table
- Amount or percentage, currency and valuation basis.
- Items included or excluded from eligible profit.
- Prior peak, carried losses and hurdles, where applicable.
- Finalisation, payment timing and correction rules.
- Minimum charges, incomplete periods and exit conditions.
Financial incentives do not ensure complete alignment
A performance fee may link manager income to results without removing every conflict. A fixed amount does not automatically imply indifference to performance either. Review risk authority, reporting transparency and independent review alongside fee structure. Higher rates or advertising payments must not purchase trust or better ranking.
Use consistent scenario assumptions
Examine profitable periods, losses, recovery and mid-period exits separately. Distinguish hypothetical calculations from actual statements, and do not deduct charges already included in net results. If a term is unknown, record an open contract question rather than guessing. Being cheaper in one scenario does not establish overall superiority.
In a manager cooperation review, explain terms with non-private calculation examples. In trading-account information, read a rate together with its scope. This article selects no particular agreement, offers no investment recommendation and provides no legal approval of terms.
