MetaTrader tutorial from installation to the first trade

MetaTrader is the main tool of forex trading. This step-by-step tutorial takes you from installation and opening a demo account to placing and closing your first trade with a stop-loss.

Almost every path in forex passes through one piece of software: MetaTrader. This MetaTrader tutorial is written for anyone who wants to learn, without confusion and step by step, from installing the program to the first practice trade — exactly what must be done before any real money.

What is MetaTrader and why does everyone use it?

MetaTrader is the trading platform of most forex brokers: the program that shows you the price chart, sends your buy and sell orders to the broker, and keeps your trade history. It has two common versions: MetaTrader 4 (MT4), older and simpler, and MetaTrader 5 (MT5), newer with more tools and markets. For starting out, their practical difference is small; install whichever your broker supports. If you do not yet know the market basics, read what is forex first.

Step one of this MetaTrader tutorial: install and open a demo account

  • Download MetaTrader only from your broker official website or the developer site; modified versions in channels and unknown sites are a road to fraud.
  • After installing, open a “demo account” inside the program or on the broker site — with virtual money and real prices.
  • Set the demo balance close to the amount you will actually bring later; a demo with a hundred thousand virtual dollars does not teach you the lessons of small money.
  • Set the demo leverage like your future real account too, so position sizes are practised realistically from day one.

Choosing the right broker matters more than the software itself; the full criteria are in our guide to choosing a broker, and the platform also keeps a list of reviewed brokers.

Know the MetaTrader interface: the four main windows

  • Chart: the heart of the program; the pair price across timeframes. Right-clicking the chart opens most of its settings.
  • Market Watch: the list of symbols with live bid and ask prices; you drag symbols from here onto the chart.
  • Navigator: your accounts, indicators and helper tools.
  • Terminal: balance, open trades, history and alerts; the place you must visit daily and become friends with.

For reading the chart and candles themselves, technical analysis for beginners is the natural next step.

How to open and close your first practice trade

Right-click the symbol in Market Watch and choose “New Order” (or press F9). Check three things obsessively: the symbol is the right one, the volume is at the minimum (usually 0.01 lots), and the execution type is “market execution”. Before pressing buy or sell, enter the stop-loss and take-profit numerically right there; a trade without a stop-loss, even on demo, builds a bad habit. Closing is done from the Terminal with the cross beside that row, and the stop-loss can be edited by double-clicking the open trade. Repeat this cycle at least twenty times on demo until your hands are fluent.

Three vital settings before real money

  • Size positions by risk, not by feeling: before every trade, know what percentage of the account disappears if your stop is hit; the method is explained in risk per trade, and the platform calculators do it for you.
  • Know the investor password: it allows viewing an account, not trading; it is for showing your record to others and reviewing accounts — and the master password must never be given to anyone.
  • Start the journal from day one: export the MetaTrader history weekly and record it in your journal; the method is in our trading journal guide.

Common beginner mistakes in MetaTrader

  • A volume of 1 lot instead of 0.01; a small typing mistake that costs dearly on a real account.
  • Trading the wrong symbol (for example spot gold instead of the intended currency pair).
  • Opening a trade into major news without knowing the release times.
  • Ignoring swap and the spread widening in quiet night hours.
  • Installing indicators and expert advisors from unknown sources promising guaranteed profit; no such thing exists.

Frequently asked questions

Is MetaTrader 4 better or 5? For retail forex both are enough; MetaTrader 5 is newer, and if your broker offers both, 5 is the more future-proof choice. Your strategy and risk management make the result, not the program version.

Is MetaTrader free? Yes, it is free for the trader and the broker pays for it; if someone asks you to pay for a “special version”, it is not special — it is fraud.

Can I trade from my phone? Yes, the mobile version is fine for reviewing and managing trades, but serious analysis and early practice are better on the desktop version where you see everything at once.

How long should I stay on demo? Until you have run one fixed method for at least several weeks with fixed size and a complete journal; the full path is laid out in how to become a trader, and the free academy courses walk with you step by step.

The bottom line

MetaTrader is only a tool; it makes neither profit nor loss, but using it correctly means half of beginner mistakes never happen at all. Install from the official source, demo with realistic balance and leverage, small size, always a stop-loss, and a journal from day one; these five habits turn a MetaTrader tutorial from “knowing the buttons” into a real skill.
