Why PAMM manager and investor returns can differ

A manager’s period return is not a new investor’s outcome. Compare entry dates, unit values, cash flows, fees and reporting currencies on a consistent basis.

A PAMM manager’s chart can be positive over a period while someone who joined during that period has a negative result. The difference alone does not establish error or misconduct. Start dates, cash movements and costs can produce two valid but non-comparable numbers. First identify which capital and which interval each percentage describes.

Separate the manager’s period from your participation

A manager’s chart may start at the beginning of a month or track record, while your capital entered later. Returns before entry do not belong to new capital. Distinguish the effective allocation time from the request or payment time; host rules may make them different.

A hypothetical unit-value example

Suppose a reporting method uses a unit index that rises from 100 to 120 and then ends at 110. The complete period returned 10 percent relative to 100. Someone entering at 120 experiences a decline of about 8.33 percent by 110. The example assumes no additional personal charges or cash movements. Not every PAMM implementation necessarily uses this reporting method.

Profit amounts and return percentages differ

When money is added or removed during a period, ending value minus starting value is not automatically a trading return. Separate deposits and withdrawals from performance. Time-based methods and methods sensitive to the size and timing of cash flows answer different questions. Do not rank their resulting percentages together without explaining the calculation.

Investor fees may differ

Contract rates, settlement timing, calculation bases and loss-recovery history can affect net outcomes. A chart may be before management fees while an individual statement is after them. Reconcile each charge with the relevant allocation agreement. A discount or fee difference neither proves better quality nor explains every return discrepancy on its own.

Align currencies and valuation

Different reporting currencies can introduce exchange-rate effects. A balance based on closed trades also differs from equity that includes open positions. Record the latest observation time and each chart’s definition. Do not compare a current figure from one report with a stale figure from another.

Start with a reconciliation table

  • Common start and end dates and each allocation’s effective time.
  • Cash movements with amount, currency and posting time.
  • The return method and definition of the valuation basis.
  • Included charges and fees not yet settled.
  • Reporting currency, conversion rates and information sources.

Break the difference into reviewable causes

Examine period and cash-flow effects first, then fees and currency conversion. If a gap remains after aligning the bases, retain report identifiers and relevant entries for clarification. Guessing a cause or accusing a manager does not replace reconciliation. Keep personal allocation and account details out of public pages.

When browsing trading-account information, read the manager’s return with its definition and reporting interval. The help centre can clarify terms, not replace an individual statement. This article recommends no entry timing and promises no repeat of historical performance. Past results do not guarantee the next investor’s outcome.
