Referral links and user privacy
This post is also available in Persian ←

A referral link should not carry contact details, identity documents or account balances. Review its destination, parameters, attribution explanation and partner-report boundaries before sharing.
A referral link may be stored in messages, browser history, social previews or access logs. Information placed in the address therefore does not remain only between sender and recipient. Professional referral arrangements should separate attribution from private user details. Convenient tracking is not sufficient reason to put sensitive data in a URL.
What should not appear in an address?
Do not append combinations of full names and phone numbers, document identifiers, personal email addresses, account balances or access secrets. URLs may be copied, forwarded or recorded by history and analytics tools. HTTPS protects transport but does not hide URL contents from all of those locations.
An attribution identifier is not an access permission
A code can identify a referral route without authorizing access to accounts, identity verification or financial records. A short or opaque code is not automatically anonymous either: a connection to an individual record can still create privacy implications. Access controls must be applied separately.
A hypothetical accidental disclosure
Suppose a partner appends a recipient’s telephone number to a link to recognize them later. The recipient forwards the address and the number remains visible in the message or preview. Deleting the original message may not remove other copies. This describes neither an active platform feature nor a real incident; it illustrates URL-based exposure.
Checks before opening or sharing
- Match the domain and final destination to an officially stated route.
- Check that parameters contain no personal information or access secrets.
- Explain the referral code and any partner benefit understandably.
- Do not condition service access on unnecessary disclosure in private messages.
- Use an independently known contact route when a destination or explanation is unclear.
Explain behavioral attribution clearly
If a system uses cookies, browser storage or event records for attribution, data types, purposes and retention periods should be clear and consistent with applicable requirements. This article does not claim that all these mechanisms are active on the platform. Required notices or consent must match actual behavior; generic wording cannot replace correctly implemented controls.
Limit what a partner report reveals
Calculating referral compensation does not justify unlimited access to documents, balances or personal financial decisions. Where aggregate or minimal information serves the purpose, additional details should not be disclosed by default. Even a sparse report covering a very small group may help identify an individual and deserves review.
Use the introducer cooperation route to clarify roles and reporting needs, and consult the platform guides for official channels. General assistance does not require putting passwords, two-factor codes or sensitive documents into public links or messages.
This article explains educational principles for reducing exposure; it is not a certification of privacy-law compliance in every jurisdiction. Attribution, retention, deletion and access arrangements must be reviewed against actual capabilities and applicable obligations.
