How swaps affect longer-horizon trading returns
This post is also available in Persian ←

Read swaps separately from spreads and management fees. Trade direction, rate units, settlement days and changing terms can alter an account’s holding costs.
A strategy holding positions across days may incur holding-related charges or credits even without opening another trade. Some forex and related-account reports label these entries swaps or holding adjustments. To understand net returns, review them separately from price movements, spreads and manager compensation.
One label does not imply one universal formula
The rate can vary with buy or sell direction, instrument, account type and host terms. It may be expressed as money per unit of size, points or an annualized percentage. Read the relevant specifications before calculating. Multiplying an advertised number by nights held is not meaningful without its units and application schedule.
A hypothetical calculation with explicit units
Suppose an instrument specifies a debit of 4 currency units per lot for the relevant direction at each ordinary assessment. A position of 0.3 lots across two identical assessments would incur 2.4 units. This example excludes other fees, changing rates and assessments with different day multipliers. It is not an actual host quote.
Calendar nights and settlement assessments differ
Holidays, settlement calendars and instrument rules may result in several days’ adjustment being applied at one assessment. A familiar rule for one currency pair does not establish every market’s schedule. Record the day cutoff, time zone and any announced changes relevant to the reporting period.
A credit is not a risk-free opportunity
One direction may receive a credit while another incurs a debit, or both directions may incur costs. A holding credit does not itself offset price losses, spreads or leverage risk. Selecting exposure solely because of a positive swap figure gives an incomplete picture. This article does not recommend a trade intended to collect swap income.
Swap-free is not necessarily cost-free
Where an account is labeled swap-free, read eligibility conditions, permitted holding periods and any substitute charges. The label does not establish the absence of every cost or unrestricted holding duration. Account-specific conditions and later changes should remain accessible and recorded.
Records for cost reconciliation
- Position identifier, direction, size and opening-to-closing interval.
- Rate units, effective dates and adjustment assessments.
- Charge currency and conversion into the account’s base currency.
- Separate debit and credit amounts from other fees.
- Check whether the charge is already included in net returns to avoid double counting.
Changing costs can alter strategy assumptions
A longer-horizon method may be sensitive to changes in rates or rules. The manager should explain actual costs against original assumptions and how discrepancies are reported. Applying today’s rate to an old period does not necessarily reconstruct historical charges; the terms effective during that period are needed.
In trading-account information, place holding costs beside position duration and returns. Cost scenarios explore explicit assumptions rather than automatically fetching broker tariffs. This educational discussion treats neither historical results nor current charges as guarantees about the future.
