Broker regulation: what does it actually guarantee?
This post is also available in Persian ←

Licence, supervision and client-asset segregation; what regulation guarantees — and what it cannot.
“A regulated broker” is a common phrase; but regulation is not a black box. Know its three components.
The three components
- Licence: is there a real supervisory authority, and can the licence number be verified?
- Supervision: is the broker’s conduct (execution, conflicts, reporting) monitored?
- Asset segregation: are client funds kept separate from the broker’s own assets?
What it does not guarantee
Regulation does not guarantee profitability or the quality of every execution; it is a set of rules and a path for recourse. Poorly-run regulated brokers exist too — so run the full four-pillar choice framework.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I verify a licence number? On the issuing regulator’s website; a real number is always verifiable.
Does offshore mean scam? Not necessarily; but the level of oversight differs and your rights in a dispute are weaker. Bring that difference into your decision.
How does asset segregation protect my money? Client assets must be held apart from company assets; in a bankruptcy your money does not join the ordinary creditor queue.
Where do I verify a licence? From the issuing supervisor’s own registry, using the registration number; the inquiry path is usually on that authority’s site. The step is simple — which is exactly what makes not doing it inexcusable. Ask the broker for the supervisor’s name and the licence number, and verify it yourself.
Summary
Regulation is the frame, not the picture; you still have to read inside the frame. Continue with the broker list.
