The hedge is active: hold it or close it?
This post is also available in Persian ←

Five factors to weigh when deciding to hold or close a hedge: the reason, market direction, carry cost, the exit plan, and your own state of mind.
The hedge has fired and now the question has taken over your life: close it or hold it? The honest answer: it depends on five factors.
The five decision factors
- Why it fired: had you crossed your risk limit, or was it a wrong signal? The reason sets the next path.
- Market direction: if the market has turned back toward your main position, the maths needs redoing.
- Carry cost: have you checked the swap on two opposing positions? Long holds cost money.
- Exit plan: at what price have you planned to close both sides?
- Your own state: if you are tired or angry, do not decide today.

Frequently asked questions
Can I close half the hedge? Partial closing is a MetaTrader feature; but the accounting of “half-closed” is trickier than fully closed. If unsure, review it with the case owner.
Close the hedge and keep the main position? That means returning to the original risk with a realised loss. The decision must be calculated, not hopeful.
When should I sleep on it? When you are tired, angry or lack information. An uninformed decision is a gamble.
Can I fully delegate the hedge decision to a tool? Part of the path — submitting the hedge — can be automated; but “hold or close the active hedge” depends on that day’s conditions and has no prefabricated answer. The tool keeps the risk border; the judgement about the cost of continuing, with that moment’s information, is yours.
